Getting started

How do I create a group?

Sign in, open Groups, and hit New group. Give it a name, pick a default currency and category, then invite people. The default currency just saves typing — members can still log expenses in any currency.

Someone in my group hasn't signed up yet.

Add them anyway by username, phone, or email. Paycent creates a ghost member that holds their place in the split, and they take it over when they register with that phone or email.

Do I have to install the app?

No. Paycent runs in any modern browser at app.paycent.net, with the same account and the same data as iOS and Android. Install the app if you want it on your home screen — nothing is web-only or mobile-only.

Expenses and balances

Which split types are supported?

Four, all first-class: equal across the group, percentage shares, weighted shares (one person counts 1.5×, another 0.5×), and fixed amounts per person. You can change the type after the fact.

How splitting works

Can one group mix currencies?

Yes — currency lives on the expense, not the group. A trip across three countries can hold euros, francs, and pounds side by side. Your dashboard shows balances per currency plus a total in your display currency.

Multi-currency detail

I entered an expense wrong.

Open it and edit. Paycent recomputes everyone's share in place and the activity feed records the before and after, so nobody has to take your word for it. Deleting works the same way.

What is a union?

A sub-group inside a group — usually a couple or a family. Their balances roll up into one unit, so a seven-person trip settles between four units instead of person-by-person.

Groups and unions

Settling up

How does Paycent decide who pays whom?

It solves for the smallest set of transfers that brings every balance to zero, rather than asking each pair to square up separately. Three friends with tangled debts settle in one payment each, not four.

How settlements work

Can I record a partial payment?

Yes. Tap a suggested settlement and edit the amount before confirming. The remainder stays on the balance and shows up in the next round of suggestions.

I recorded a payment that never happened.

Delete it from the group's settlement history. Balances recompute immediately and the deletion lands in the activity feed for everyone to see.

Account and access

I forgot my password.

Use the reset link on the sign-in screen. Enter the email or phone on your account and we'll send instructions. Resetting your password doesn't sign you out of your other devices.

I think someone else has my session.

Open Settings, go to Security, and sign out everywhere. That revokes every active token on every device, including one a lost phone might be holding. Then sign back in and change your password.

How do I leave a group?

Open the group's settings and choose Leave group. If you created the group, you can delete it there instead — that removes it for everyone, so settle up first.

How do I delete my account?

Settings → Account → Delete account, in the app or on the web. Deletion is permanent and your data is anonymized. Paycent blocks the request while you still have an unsettled balance in any group, so square those up first.
